For this post it’s time to take a different look at another type of movie. This movie still falls under the category of Sci-fi and Adventure. Let’s take a step away from the comic crusaders and epic heroes to reflect on a different type of story. With The Hunger Games: The Mockingjay part 1 we follow the continued story of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). The girl who became a hero and inspiration the people through the deadly Hunger Games.
For those of you who read the books, of course I’m sure you know what’s going to happen. Glad to see movies are encouraging us all to do our homework. Well as we all know Katniss is used by the rebellion as a means of propaganda to encourage people to stand up against the capital and the ruthless President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Katniss is accompanied by a camera crew to go out and film the devastation of a few districts to show the world what President Snow is doing. The rebels in district 13 using highly advanced technology broadcast their message across the airways by jamming all the TV and multimedia feeds over all districts. These messages spark people to rise up and fight.
Our heroine inspires the sick and wounded.
This portion of the story builds up a lot for part 2. As we watch, we are confined to the hidden underground rebel base and rubble of a few districts. Later in the movie we are treated to a black ops mission inside the capital that ends up going wrong. We also see maybe 2 scenes of rebels fighting against the capital. However these people don’t have any weapons or armor to fight. They mostly just try to dodge bullets. Yet they still manage to kill a few of President Snow’s soldiers and blow up a dam knocking out all power to the capital. Hopefully the rebels rethink their strategies and have less suicide missions. Plus they say the word, “Mockingjay” so many times in this movie. When it comes out on DVD and Blu-ray, I’ll bet that people will play a drinking game by taking a shot every time a character says, “Mockingjay”. But enough with the jokes, let’s move on.
Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) with President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore)
Nearing the end of the film Katniss is reunited with a tortured, beaten and thinner Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). Also the others are liberated in the black ops raid that include, Johanna (Jena Malone), and Annie Cresta (Stef Dawson). After the black ops raid and the bombing of the rebel base we are left with a to be concluded type of ending. Yep that’s right, we are left at the end wanting to see more. But we have to wait til part 2 comes out. Most of us can’t wait that long. Until then I think I’m going to pick up the book and find out what happens.
In-case you didn’t know, this movie is based off of a Marvel comic book series. Today we see a CGI animated adaptation of this group of technical nerds turned superheroes. Disney and Marvel team up yet again to bring us another entertaining movie that’s fun for the whole family. Now it did not do so well opening night in second place, while the movie Interstellar starring Matthew McConaughey came in number one. Despite that, this movie has been hanging on to the top 3 movies in its second week.
In this film we join Hiro (Ryan Potter) a teenage boy genius who puts his robotics and engineering skills to earning a quick buck by fighting robots. He’s rescued from this underground robot fighting ring by his older brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) who is also a genius. Being the older brother Tadashi takes it upon himself to show his brother how to put his genius and talents to good use by showing him his lab at school. Hiro being uninterested, jokingly calls it, “nerd lab”. While there at the nerd lab Hiro meets the Tadashi’s classmates and sees the new high tech gadgets they are working on. This crew of nerds consists of Go Go (Jamie Chung), Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez), Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr), and Fred (T.J. Miller). Fred is mostly a nerd because of his interest in comics, but he doesn’t have interest in being an engineer.

Hiro is then greeted by Tadashi’s biggest project Baymax a medical robot use to heal and provide treatment to patience. Baymax takes on the appearance of a big white balloon with black eyes. He has robot tech on the inside and is programmed to help Hiro. After seeing the Tadashi’s school and the nerd lab, Hiro’s interest changes. He begins to create some new micro robots in order to win acceptance into Tadashi’s school. The micro bots are controlled telepathically by a band Hiro wears around his head. Tadashi is later met with an unfortunate accident. Hiro then decides not to pursue his goal of going to college. While mourning for his brother, Baymax appears and offers Hiro comfort and help. Hiro’s new friends also come to his aid to help him through this loss. But during this time a villain in a kabuki mask appears with Hiro’s stolen micro bots.
Hiro suspects that this villain is responsible for the lab explosion and the death of his brother. Determined to avenge his Tadashi and get his technology back. Hiro gives Baymax an Iron Man type upgrade that enables him to have super strength, flight, armor, and shoot fist rockets. Baymax even has the same poses as Iron Man.

Hiro also dons on his own set of armor he uses to help Baymax. But these two are not alone in this fight they are later joined by their fellow nerds from school. They too are given super powers using their own technology.

I’m not going to spoil anything else on Big Hero 6. Just go see for yourself. This film is filled with action and fun for the whole family. Your kids will definitely love this film and it will keep their eyes on the screen. If you’re a fan of comic books, it’s worth checking out. This is the type of magic that only Disney can bring us. If you want to see a movie that has something everyone can enjoy, go see this one. If you look carefully, you’ll even see a CGI Stan Lee.
A few months ago DC confirmed that Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) will be in the Shazam movie. Many though that he would take on the role of the hero Shazam himself but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Dwayne Johnson will play the part of Black Adam the enemy of Shazam.

However the role will be more of an anti-hero rather than an evil nemesis. No doubt Dwayne Johnson is the most electrifying man in sports entertainment and an awesome action star. He has delighted crowds from his days as a WWE superstar and body slammed the box office with many different movies. By far The Rock entertains and love him or hate him he is the great one.
Fanart concept of The Rock as Black Adam
Shazam is a superhero who’s alter ego is a kid named Billy Batson. Shazam was originally called Captain Marvel but they are going to go with Shazam. When Billy says the magic word Shazam he transforms into an adult superhero with super human abilities similar to superman. However his powers are magical. Black Adam has powers similar to Shazam making him a formidable adversary.
Training like a superhero.
You got to admire Dwayne Johnson’s hard work and dedication he puts into being larger than life and entertaining the people. If you follow him on Facebook and Twitter you see he’s either hitting the gym or on set of his latest movie. I feel that he can portray this character well and he’s a great choice for the part. Playing an anti-hero in a movie will be different for him, although it won’t be much of a challenge. Back in the mid-90s of the WWE’s attitude era he turned heel and became the main rival of wrestlers like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, CM Punk, John Cena, and the legendary Hulk Hogan.
With superhero movies becoming popular these days, film makers want to make sure they make a big hit at the box office. Who better to give DC the boost they need than the great one. Marvel is in the lead so far with all the recent success and the new movies they have coming up. It’s a huge possibility that The Rock will steal the show making the movie more Black Adam than Shazam. While I am not a fan of this particular comic book character, I will go see this movie because I am a fan of comic book movies. I can’t wait to see this movie. I’m already adding it to my list of things to see.
First of all I didn’t know that marvel was doing their movies into phases. So what was phase 2? Or what was phase 1? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that we all can expect to see a huge line-up of brand new marvel movies from 2016 to 2019. We’ll be introduced to new characters that will be making their first silver screen debut. Others will be making their appearance on new television series. For those of you not familiar with some of these new superheroes and their stories, it might be time to head to a comic book store and do some homework. Or you can just look them up on Wikipedia.
The list of new films coming soon.
We start off with everyone’s favorite star spangled avenger Captain America. Chris Evans has signed on to play the super soldier for a total of 8 movies. So far he’s got 3 down (First Avenger, Avengers, & Winter Soldier) and 5 left to go. For the 4th movie starring Cap will have the Civil War. This teases that it will follow the Marvel Civil War Storyline. Can’t wait to see how it plays out. Then we will see the Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel. The Guardians of the Galaxy will be coming back for round 2 following the huge success of their first movie. The Inhumans will follow the year after Thor’s Ragnarok and then a two part series of Avengers Infinity War.
With all these movies I hope they keep the same actors and not do recasts like they’ve done a few times. An example would be recasting Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo to play the Incredible Hulk. We’ve also seen Marvel stumble in the past with making movies and often times we see reboots over and over. Sometimes they get it right the next go round. Some of the rebooted movies include the Hulk, Fantastic 4 (coming soon), and Spider-Man.
Marvel’s competitors DC have been doing well with TV series such as Arrow, Gotham, and The Flash. Marvel only has Agents of Shield, but they are looking to add to their presence on TV with new series. Who better to lead the charge than Daredevil who is moving down from the big screen. We all know about the Daredevil movie that many fans did not like at all. But I can tell you I liked this movie and I think fans were too hard on it. Many fans I’ve met argue with me over and over but I’m sticking with what I like. Along with Daredevil will come AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. These characters aren’t as well known as the big guns such as Captain America or Iron Man, but they do have good stories that will transfer well to television.
It’s great to finally get to see all of our favorite heroes brought to life on the big screen. This is something that Marvel fans have wanted for a long time. There is lots of excitement, hype, and anticipation for these movies. Marvel is on roll with all this box office success and we can only hope that they continue to get better and better. DC on the other hand is a little worried. They are gearing up for a Justice League movie to answer Marvel’s Avengers. I still think they should have kept Christian Bale as Batman, but I’m going to give Ben Affleck a chance. Marvel is a huge step ahead of DC, and I hope that they are gearing up for some big box office movies of their own.
Marvel vs DC
Everyone is jumping up and down with excitement about the trailer from Avengers 2 Age of Ultron. This trailer blasted over the internet with hopes that will be just as good and maybe better than the first Avengers movie. In this trailer we see our favorite superhero characters as well as new ones that include Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch. We got a sneak peek of these two characters at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch from Captain America: Winter Soldier.
We also got to see Quicksilver in X-Men Days of Future’s past played by a different actor. For those of you that don’t know, in the Marvel Universe Quicksilver is a character that joins the X-Men and Avengers. With Fox having the rights to the X-Men and Disney having the rights to the Avengers, we wonder if this is the same Quicksilver.
Marvel’s character Quicksilver is played by two different actors in two different Marvel movies.
In the trailer we see Iron Man in his Hulk busting armor which leads us to think that he’s going to have a little fight with the Incredible Hulk at some point in the movie. I can’t wait to see the cosplay for that armor. Captain America has a new outfit of his own. Looks similar to the stealth suit he wore in the Winter Soldier movie but with more red and white. People didn’t like the suit he wore in The Avengers, but I liked it. It was a little accurate to the comics. Let’s not forget the other Avengers such as The Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor.
The main villain Ultron.
Now comes Ultron the robot villain of the film. He looked accurate to the comics with a cinema glare to him. The only problem was the Pinnocio reference, “No strings”. I know Marvel is owned by Disney now but do we really need to be reminded? Trailers like this usually give me some excitement but for some reason this one didn’t. Oh well, Disney has done well with the Marvel movies so far. Let’s wait for April and see what happens.
When I first heard of this movie, I was thinking it might be a film based on the Hanna Barbera superhero character. Others thought it would be a comedy based on the Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law from Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
Well this movie is neither, however it does feature a character in the film that is called Birdman. The film stars Michael Keaton who plays Riggan Thomson a washed up actor trying to make a comeback on Broadway. He is forever known for playing the role of the superhero Birdman back in 1992. No matter what he does he cannot shed this winged avenger that is haunting him. So basically Riggan Thomson and Birdman are similar to Michael Keaton and Batman.
We begin the film with opening credits and a drum solo followed by Riggan meditating in his underwear. Something nobody wants to see but everyone in the movie theater will watch. What makes the scene stranger is that he’s floating. We are left to question why is he floating? Is he really a superhero? I decided to go with it and see what the movie brings us. Shortly after this scene we see that Riggan is in a theater on Broadway getting ready for a play which he is directing and starring in. We are then introduced to other characters which include his friend and producer Jake (Zach Glifianakis), Lesley (Naomi Watts), and Sam Thomson (Emma Stone). After losing the play’s supporting actor to an accident, Riggan and his crew find Mike Shiner played by Edward Norton. He’s a good actor needed for this production to make it successful. He’s arrogant, narcissistic, and annoys Riggan. But Riggan is forced to put up with him for the sake of the play’s success. Majority of the film takes place in this theater but later on we are introduced to other parts of New York City.
Riggan has lots to deal with besides the play. His family life, that has him dealing with his daughter who came out of rehab. He attempts to be a good father by giving her a job working on the play’s production staff. However his ex-wife tells him he needs to do more than that. Riggan also has to deal with a voice inside his head giving him honest opinions and hurtful comments on himself. The voice later on turns out to be his old character Birdman haunting his mind. And of course Riggan has some sort of telepathic power that allows him to move things with his mind, and allows him to fly. This power is never really explained in the film and the audience is led to question if this power is for real, or are we just taking a journey into the mind of Riggan.
After numerous rehearsals and previews before opening night, Riggan has an unpleasant confrontation with the most well-known theater critic in New York City. She tells Riggan that she will destroy his play which upsets him. We see Riggan losing his mind again and all of a sudden the voice appears and then we finally see Birdman walking behind him. Riggan later floats himself up to a building where he jumps off and flies around New York back to the theater.
The final part of the films shows Riggan in the play using a real gun instead of a fake gun. The play calls for Riggan’s character to shoot himself. It’s suppose to be a fake gun. We see that the insanity has finally taken it’s toll on Riggan and he ends his life. So we think, but it turns out he just shot his nose off. Riggan awakens in the hospital realizing that his attempted suicide gave the play positive reviews and complete success. He was a star again and all over the news. People were outside the hospital wishing him a speedy recovery. Riggan walks up to an open window in the hospital. He looks out at the birds flying around and leaps out the window. His daughter then walks over to the window and we see a stunned smile in amazement. Then the film comes to an end and again we are left to think that what she saw was her father flying. So maybe it wasn’t a hallucination. Maybe he really did have telepathic powers.
In conclusion the film was not what I expected. I saw things that were confusing and weird. The whole setting was confined to the theater and we never went anywhere and just followed Michael Keaton and the rest of the cast around. Not many wide shots, just close ups mostly. We don’t see what’s going on until maybe 20 minutes into the film. But on a positive note, the acting was good. We see Zach Glifianakis do a great job in his role. He was more serious than his role as the funny fat guy in the Hangover. Emma Stone and Edward Norton’s characters worked well and their romance wasn’t important but the chemistry they displayed worked well. It was amazing that Michael Keaton went from serious to insane on and on in the film. He has been known to do that in a few films such as Multiplicity where he took on four different versions of himself. I probably wouldn’t want to see this film again and it’s not going to go on my DVD/Blu-ray collection shelf. So prepare for a Birdman movie with not that much Birdman in it. It’s not really about Birdman in the first place, it’s just the unexpected virtue of ignorance.
Hello and welcome to Cinema Cab. In this blog I’ll be talking about comic book and sci-fi movies. I’ll also be writing reviews on new releases. First I want to express that these opinions are that of my own. Please support the official releases of these films.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed comic book super heroes. I read comics to get away from the pressures of school, bullies, and athletics. The stories always inspired me and made me strive to do well in life. Whenever I felt down I just pick up a comic book and let the stories take me away. Many of these super heroes were characters that I could relate to. As I read these comic books, I often wondered what it would be like to see these heroes on the movie screen. With the technology advancement and the success of some super hero movies, we are seeing these comic book movies come out every summer. Sometimes it’s a hit and miss situation. We’ve seen movies like Batman Begins from 2005 hit the billion dollar bullseye and others just fail badly like Batman and Robin from 1997.
In those failures we see reboots which are a brand new movie base on the same comic book character. These reboots have new storyline, new actors, new costumes, and everything. Mostly reasons for these reboots are a film company trying to keep the rights to the film or just trying to make more money. Usually it’s both.
Fans at times are loving these films or just destroying them with criticism on the internet. Good or bad we love to see new movies come out and we’ll be lined up ready to get tickets, popcorn, and sodas. All we can do is cross our fingers and hope that Hollywood’s adaptation of our favorite super heroes, and sci-fi characters live up to our expectations.
